For 25 years now the Vineyard Sound has been an annual fixture of summer entertainment on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. Founded in 1992, the all-male vocal group began as a group of ten friends from Connecticut College, Skidmore College and Wesleyan University who came together with a common love for creating music and exploring the island.
The group learned over forty songs in the first few weeks of summer and then spent the duration singing on street corners, performing in restaurants, and holding concerts from Edgartown to Aquinnah. Over the course of three months the founding members created a lasting bond that continues to this day- the experience of singing in the most beautiful place in the Northeast for the most supportive and enthusiastic fans is truly unforgettable.
Beginning the group’s third decade, the tradition lives on in much the same way as it began. Starting June 1st, the season’s members move into a house and begin a strict practice regimen to learn a diverse repertoire comprised of everything from jazz standards and contemporary pop songs to children’s music and indie rock.
At any Vineyard Sound performance fans of all ages can expect to enjoy stellar vocals, inventive and award-winning arrangements, and engaging humor. Performances vary not just summer to summer but even night to night! Over the course of 90 days the group members will sing their hearts out all around the island at scheduled weekly performances, private functions, camps, schools, island benefits, and at spur of the moment get-togethers.
The group continues to draw members from the three founding schools, but has also added members from select colleges and universities across the country. Most members will stay in the group for 2-3 summers, or until they are pulled away by the clutches of “real life.”
As of the winter of 2009, the Vineyard Sound is a federally recognized, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, dedicated to providing topnotch entertainment to public audiences around the island all summer long. Over 100 guys have had the privilege of singing nearly 2000 performances for the Vineyard audience and the organization hopes to continue being a part of the Martha’s Vineyard summer tradition for years to come.
